Year R - Elf Class

Welcome to Elf Class. We are a happy, caring and exciting Reception class where every child is encouraged to feel safe, valued and inspired to learn. We are delighted to offer a broad and balanced curriculum in a warm and friendly atmosphere.  Elf Class is taught by Miss Mead, with support from our wonderful Learning Support Assistants, Mrs Moon, who is with us Monday to Friday, and Miss Batchelor, who supports the class each morning. Our Early Years Foundation Stage is overseen by Mrs Hooper.

Baseline Assessment

Within the first six weeks of Term one, children will take the Baseline Assessment, which identifies what the children are able to do at the beginning of their Reception Year, there is an information booklet for parents which explains this.

All the children in the foundation stage will be following the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum which encompasses learning and development in seven main areas.

The prime areas are fundamental and support learning and development in all other areas.  The three prime areas are:

  • Personal, social and emotional development

  • Communication and language

  • Physical development

The specific areas include essential knowledge and skills, these are:

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding of the world

  • Expressive arts and design

The continuous provision and experiences we provide enable the children to develop in these seven areas in a happy, safe and playful environment.

The classroom is a bright airy space with lots of fantastic displays and stimulating resources, the children also have access to a wonderful outdoor area, which is a favourite space for most of our children! The children are taught to follow our six school values: respect, responsibility, kindness, teamwork, excellence and resilience and these are woven into all areas of learning.

Throughout the year in Elf Class, our learning is organised around six exciting themes that inspire curiosity, creativity and a love of learning. We begin with All About Me, where children learn about themselves, their families and what makes everyone unique. In Let's Celebrate, we explore a variety of festivals, traditions and special occasions from around the world. Our Amazing Animals topic encourages children to discover different habitats, life cycles and fascinating creatures. During People Who Help Us, we learn about the important roles of people in our community and how they keep us safe and healthy. In Come Outside, we investigate the changing seasons, plants, minibeasts and the natural world around us. Finally, we finish the year with Fun at the Seaside, where children enjoy learning about coastal environments, seaside holidays past and present, and life by the sea through a range of engaging, hands-on activities. Each theme is carefully planned to develop children's knowledge and skills across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage, making learning meaningful, exciting and memorable.

We are fortunate to enjoy Forest School every week, giving children regular opportunities to learn and explore in our outdoor environment. Forest School is a child-centred approach to learning that encourages children to investigate, take appropriate risks, solve problems and develop confidence through hands-on experiences in nature. During our Forest School sessions, children enjoy activities such as den building, bug hunting, exploring the changing seasons, creating natural artwork, using natural resources, developing teamwork and taking part in imaginative play. These experiences help children to build resilience, independence and perseverance while fostering a love and respect for the natural world.

The staff in Long Mead Foundation Unit are happy, enthusiastic and keen to create a safe and supportive environment for your child.  Our approach to learning is playful, stimulating and inspiring.  It is the right of all children to learn to love learning and have a positive school experience enabling them to reach their full potential.
