PE and Sports Funding
"All pupils leave primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport."
- DfE Vision Statement for Primary PE and Sports Premium
What is the Sports Premium?
In April 2013, the Government announced new PE and sport funding of £150 million for Physical Education (PE) and sport – often referred to in the media as a ‘Sport Premium’. This funding is intended to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision.
The Government recognised that schools have a central role to play in supporting all children and young people to live healthy active lives. This is particularly true of primary school where the foundations of positive and enjoyable participation in regular physical activity should be established.
Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, sport and physical activity they provide. The PE and sports premium should be used to:

•build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now are sustainable and will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

•develop or add to the PE, sport and physical activity provided
How we use the sports funding at Long Mead
We believe that the sports funding must be used so that all children benefit regardless of sporting ability. We aim for all children to be physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in and enjoyment of physical activity and sport.
Funding is used to increase the confidence of staff in the delivery of high-quality provision across the school. All children are provided with 2 hours of curriculum PE time a week, plus opportunities to engage in extra-curricular PE and sport. In addition to this, we encourage active playtimes and active lunchtimes to ensure every child is getting their recommended 60 minutes of activity per day.
Funding has also been used to increase the number of competitions and festivals that we have entered – we aim that every child at Long Mead will get the opportunity to represent the school either at a home event or one held elsewhere. Buying into the local sports partnership has increased the range of sporting events we attend and has given the children the chance to try different activities such as Cheerleading.
The School Games Mark
The School Games Mark is a government-led award scheme which launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward and recognise schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and community and to celebrate keeping young people active.
We are very proud to state that, once again, Long Mead has been achieved the School Games Mark Gold Award. This is a fantastic achievement!
