Severe Weather Arrangements

During the cold weather of 2018, Long Mead Community Primary School remained open every day. Therefore, it will only be in particularly bad weather conditions that the school will close. Our team will make every effort to prepare the site for the safe running of a school day.

Therefore, the parents and students should expect, and plan that, the school will remain open.

As always, the decision to send your child to school in severe weather rests with the parents. It may be difficult for those who live some distance away to bring their child to school, but there is an expectation that pupils who live within the locality WILL attend.

Please be aware that normal timetabled lessons are unlikely to operate on such days, and students will be expected to remain indoors.

If the school is closed, a text message will be sent to parents/carers. A message will also be placed on the school website ( and Facebook page, as well as the KCC School Closures web site (

Parents can register for text and email alerts on the Kent closures website. This means that as soon as the status of the school is changed on the website, registered parents will receive a text or an email.

The Kent Closures website is used by local radio, but local radio should not be relied upon when many schools are closed as they are not able to announce all closures.

We will endeavour to post information by 7am. If no information about closures is posted on this site, then the school is open as normal. Please do not telephone the school to check.

School Minibus

The school will contact the parents/carers of those children that use the minibus in severe weather if the minibus is not running.

School Dinners

In periods of heavy snow we may not be able to provide a school meal, please send your child with a packed lunch in case, as we may not know whether Cage Green are able to provide a meal until later in the morning.

Leaving school during the day

Once open, a normal school day will operate where possible.

Parents are requested NOT to arrive at school to collect their child(ren) early without contacting the school in advance to make arrangements. This is incredibly unsettling for those who are remaining and can cause significant anxiety.

In the event of closure.......

If the school is required to closed, work will be made available online via the school website.
